Kandolus (Persian: كندلوس)[a] is a village in Zanus Rastaq Rural District of Kojur District, Nowshahr County, Mazandaran province, Iran.[4] Kandolus village sits in the heart of the Alborz mountain range, along the Zanos valley.[5]
History
Kandolus is among some of the oldest human settlements in the Mazandaran province. The local Anthropology Museum of Kandolus displays local artefacts such as agricultural tools, pottery, paintings, and utensils dating from the second millennium BCE to the Qajar era.
Other attractions in the village include the Qajar era bathhouse, and the Museum of Medicinal Plants, established by Dr Ali Asghar Jahangiri.[6]
Mehdi Baharvand, an official from Iran's Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, announced in 2023 that eight Iranian villages are vying for the title of Global Village, awarded by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Among these, the village of Kandolous has also been nominated for UNESCO status.[7]
Mohammad Valipour, the head of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Department of Noshahr has confirmed that the villages dossier has been submitted to UNESCO for worldwide recognition.[8]
Demographics
Population
At the time of the 2006 National Census, the village's population was 115 in 45 households. [9] The following census in 2011 counted 915 people in 273 households. [10] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 1,092 people in 378 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district of Zanus Rastaq.[2]
