Maiden Voyage

A maiden voyage is a ship's first journey. The word "maiden" used to be synonymous with virgin. Given that ships are feminine in Western Culture, and people often use "she" or "her" to refer to their ships, the untested ship is seen to be losing its virginity to the sea on first launch.
