Radu Bartolomeu Gabrea (20 June 1937 – 9 February 2017) was a Romanian film director and screenwriter.[1] He directed more than twenty films between 1969 and 2016.[2] He showed his first film in the Locarno Festival.[3]

Born in Bucharest, he attended the city's Spiru Haret High School [ro].[4] He then enrolled in the Technical University of Civil Engineering, graduating in 1960. During that time, he participated in the Bucharest student movement of 1956; arrested and interrogated by the Securitate, he was released a year later. Subsequently, he studied film directing at the I.L. Caragiale Institute of Theatre and Film Arts (IATC), from where he graduated in 1968. He made his debut two years later with the movie Too Little for Such a Big War [ro].[5]

Gabrea died in Bucharest in 2017, at age 79, and was buried in the city's Bellu Cemetery.[6]
