The National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SERNANP) is a specialized technical public agency of the Peruvian State, under the Ministry of the Environment of Peru,[2] responsible for directing and establishing the technical and administrative criteria for the conservation of Peru's Natural Protected Areas (Sistema Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado – SINANPE). SERNANP was created on 13 May 2008, replacing the former National Institute of Natural Resources - INRENA, founded on 27 November 1992 as an agency under the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation.[3] Additionally, it ensures the conservation of Protected Natural Areas, their biological diversity, and the maintenance of their ecosystem services, within the framework of its participatory management and in line with a comprehensive policy of sustainable development for the country.
