Thomas Lockley (born 1978) is an English educator residing in Japan.[1] He is an associate professor of the College of Law of Nihon University,[2][1][3] as well as a visiting researcher for the SOAS University of London.[3] He is also a writer who penned works such as African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan.

Lockley was born in the United Kingdom in 1978.[1][4]

Lockley first came to Japan in 2000 as a participant of the JET Programme and stayed at Tottori City for 2 years,[4] where he worked as an Assistant Language Teacher at an elementary school.[5] He then became a full-time lecturer at the Nihon University College of Law,[4] before becoming an associate professor at the college in 2019.[6] That same year, he also became a visiting researcher for SOAS.[3]

Lockley's field of study is languages, particularly in Content and Language Integrated Learning.[4] Lockley also does research in Japanese and Asian history.[3] Lockley teaches history and English at school,[3] with him teaching Japanese history from an International perspective.[1][3][4]

In 2016, he released a thesis paper titled The Story of Yasuke: Nobunaga's African Retainer on the Nihon University's journal Ōmon Ronsō (桜文論叢),[4][7] and in 2017 he published his first work titled Nobunaga to Yasuke : Honnoji o ikinobita kokujinsamurai (信長と弥助 本能寺を生き延びた黒人侍).[3] In 2019, he wrote African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan in the United States together with Geoffrey Girard.[3]
