"Rain" adalah lagu karya grup musik rok Inggris The Beatles yang dirilis pada 30 Mei 1966 sebagai sisi-B dari singel "Paperback Writer" mereka. Kedua lagu tersebut direkam selama sesi rekaman album Revolver, tetapi keduanya tidak dimasukkan ke album tersebut. "Rain" ditulis oleh John Lennon dan diakui oleh kemitraan Lennon–McCartney. Ia menjelaskan bahwa lagu tersebut bermakna "tentang orang-orang yang mengeluh tentang cuaca setiap saat".[3]
Rekaman lagu ini mengandung jalur ritme yang diperlambat, nada bas yang berdengung dan vokal yang dibalik. Dirilisnya lagu ini merupakan pertama kalinya suara yang dibalik muncul dalam lagu pop, walaupun The Beatles menggunakan teknik yang sama di lagu Revolver "Tomorrow Never Knows" yang direkam beberapa hari sebelumnya.[4] Ringo Starr menganggap "Rain" sebagai rekaman permainan drum terbaiknya. Tiga film promosi dibuat untuk lagu ini dan mereka dianggap sebagai salah satu pendahulu video musik.
Latar belakang dan tema
Lennon mengatakan bahwa "Rain" membahas tentang "Orang-orang yang mengeluh karena ... mereka tidak suka cuaca".[5] Tafsiran lainnya adalah "hujan" dan "matahari" yang disebutkan lagu ini mengacu pada fenomena yang dialami saat menggunakan LSD.[6] Lennon sudah pernah bernyanyi tentang bagaimana pikiran lebih penting daripada materi di lagu tahun 1963 The Beatles "There's a Place"; dengan "Rain", ia membawa ide ini lebih jauh melalui pengaruh obat halusinogen.[7] Penulis Nicholas Schaffner menyebut lagu ini sebagai lagu The Beatles pertama yang menggambarkan dunia fisik sebagai sebuah ilusi, sebuah tema yang Lennon dan George Harrison banyak jelajahi selama periode psikedelis grup ini.[8]
Dalam artikel pada awal dekade 1970-an mengenai kemitraan penulisan lagu Lennon–McCartney, "Rain" adalah salah satu lagu yang Lennon sebut ditulis oleh dirinya sendiri.[9] Menurut ingatan Paul McCartney di biografi terotorisasinya Many Years from Now pada tahun 1997, mereka bekerja sama pada lagu ini, dan porsi penulisannya "70–30 untuk John".[10] McCartney mengingat: "Lagu-lagu biasanya menganggap hujan sebagai hal yang buruk dan yang kami rasa adalah itu bukan hal buruk. Komposisi
Menurut ahli musikologi Alan Pollack, meskipun rekaman The Beatles tidak menggunakan "sitar atau instrumen 'musik dunia' etnis lainnya", "Rain" sangat membangkitkan gaya musik tradisional India dengan "harmoninya yang mendengung dan nadanya yang kadang berbunga".[12] Ahli etnomusikologi David Reck menyebut lagu ini sebagai "penyerapan Orientalisme yang lebih halus" dibandingkan dengan "Tomorrow Never Knows" dan "Love You To", tetapi masih memiliki suara India melalui gitar utama Harrison yang berdistorsi, permainan drum Ringo Starr, dan penggunaan efek pita yang dibalik.[13][nb 1] Nyanyian Lennon juga menggunakan timbre dan ornamentasi datar, dalam bentuk gamaka, dari musik vokal Hindustani.[14]
